If your pool pump is failing or your electric bill jumped, two questions come up fast: is there a rebate, and what pump am I allowed to install? Here’s the short version for Roseville and the Sacramento area, from a licensed local pool contractor. Rebate details were last checked on September 26, 2026.

- SMUD customers: SMUD’s current home rebates don’t include pool pumps.

Roseville Electric pool pump rebate
Roseville Electric offers up to $200 per residence when you install a qualifying variable speed pool pump. Here are the main rules:
- Your home is a single-family residence that gets its electricity from Roseville Electric
- One rebate per residence
- The pump is for an in-ground pool (above-ground pools, spas, ponds and cleaner booster pumps don’t qualify)
- The pump is bought new at retail and set up for the size of your pool
- Your application is postmarked within 90 days of purchase
What you need to apply
- Your Roseville Electric account number
- A paid invoice showing the contractor or retailer and the pump’s model number
- The signed rebate application
You can apply online at roseville.ca.us/rebates. When we replace your pump, your invoice lists the model number and our contractor details, so the paperwork is quick.
Can I get the rebate in Rocklin, Granite Bay or Lincoln?
Only if your electricity comes from Roseville Electric. The rebate follows your electric provider, not your mailing address, so check the name on your electric bill.
SMUD and PG&E customers
SMUD used to offer a variable speed pool pump rebate, but that program ended in 2020, and SMUD’s current home rebate list doesn’t include pool pumps. We also couldn’t find a current PG&E residential pool pump rebate. Rebates change, so check your utility’s site before you buy.
Even without a rebate, most of the savings come from your electric bill. Roseville Electric says variable speed pumps can save up to 90% on pump energy costs compared with single- or two-speed pumps.
California’s pool pump rules in plain English
California’s appliance efficiency rules, known as Title 20, have limited single-speed pool pumps since 2008. The newest rule from the California Energy Commission covers replacement pool pump motors made on or after July 19, 2021: if the motor is 0.5 total horsepower or more, it must be variable speed.
What this means for you
- Your single-speed pump still works? You don’t have to replace it today.
- When it fails, the new pump or replacement motor will almost always need to be variable speed.
- Booster pumps for pressure-side pool cleaners follow different rules.
- Programming matters. A variable speed pump left on high all day saves very little, so have it set up for your pool.
How much can a variable speed pump save?
The savings come from running slower for longer. Roseville Electric explains that running a pump at half speed uses about a quarter of the energy of full speed, so 16 hours on low costs about half as much as 8 hours on high. Your actual savings depend on your pool, your old pump and how the new one is programmed.

No. The rules apply when a pump or motor is sold or replaced. You can keep using a working pump, but when it fails, the replacement will almost always need to be variable speed.
How much does a pool pump add to my electric bill?
It depends on the pumpu0026#8217;s size, how many hours it runs and your electric rate. A single-speed pump running many hours a day can be one of the larger electric loads in a home, which is why variable speed pumps save so much.
Is the Roseville Electric pool pump rebate taxable?
Roseville Electricu0026#8217;s application says rebates may be considered income for tax purposes. Ask your tax advisor about your situation.
Who fills out the rebate form?
The Roseville Electric account holder or property owner submits the application. We provide the invoice details it asks for, including the pump model number.
Does SMUD offer a pool pump rebate?
