“Low maintenance” isn’t no maintenance.
A salt pool isn’t chlorine-free. The salt cell turns dissolved salt into chlorine, so your water still needs the same balance as any pool, plus a few salt-specific checks.
Salt pools tend to drift toward high pH, and calcium scale slowly builds up on the cell plates. Left alone, a scaled cell makes less chlorine, and the pool can turn cloudy or green even though the system looks like it’s running. Our monthly pool service covers salt pools and includes:
- Salt level tested and adjusted
- Chlorine output checked
- pH and alkalinity kept in range
- Stabilizer and calcium balanced
- Salt cell checked for scale
- Readings in your client portal after each visit
Salt Cell Cleaning
Signs your salt cell needs attention
A clean cell makes chlorine efficiently. A scaled or worn cell works harder and makes less, and that’s when salt pools start to look cloudy or green.
Salt cell cleaning is free for full service clients. For chemical-only and one-time customers, it’s $65 per cleaning.
We remove the cell, clean off the scale, inspect the plates and reinstall it. If the cell is worn out, we’ll tell you and quote a replacement. For pumps and other equipment, see pool pump repair and pool equipment repair.

Are salt water pools chlorine-free?
No. The salt cell turns salt into chlorine. The water feels gentler, but it’s still a chlorine pool and still needs regular balancing.
How much does salt cell cleaning cost?
It’s free for our full service clients. For chemical-only and one-time customers, salt cell cleaning is $65 per cleaning.
How often should a salt cell be cleaned?
It depends on your water’s calcium level and how hard the cell works. Many manufacturers recommend inspecting the cell every few months. We check it during service and clean it when scale starts to build.
Why does my salt system say “check cell”?
Usually the cell is scaled, the salt level is low, or water flow is off. Sometimes the cell is simply worn out. Rather than turning the output up, call or text us at 916-534-0561 and we’ll find the cause.
Can I clean my salt cell myself?
You can, but it usually involves diluted muriatic acid, which calls for gloves, eye protection and care. We clean it safely and inspect the plates while the cell is out.
