How to Save Money on Pool Service: One Price, Chemicals and Filter Cleaning Included

Most pool owners in Roseville and the Sacramento area don’t overspend on the monthly bill. They overspend on the surprises: a separate charge for chemicals, a filter cleaning that shows up as an extra line item, or a pump that quits with no warning and has to be replaced that same week. Here is how The Goods Pool Service keeps those costs down, with one monthly price that includes your chemicals, filter cleaning at no extra charge, and an owner who checks your equipment every single visit.

Where pool owners actually lose money

  • Chemicals billed separately. A low monthly rate can climb fast once chlorine, acid, and other chemicals are added to the bill.
  • Extra charges for routine work. Filter cleanings and salt cell cleanings are often booked and billed as separate jobs.
  • Equipment that fails without warning. A small leak or a noisy pump that nobody mentions can turn into a full replacement.
  • A pool that turns green. Skipped or rushed chemistry in Sacramento heat can turn a pool in days, and a cleanup costs far more than a month of proper care.

One monthly price, chemicals included

With us, all of your pool chemicals are included in your monthly price. They are not added as a separate line on your bill. Chemical-only service starts at $120 per month, and full service, where we also handle all the cleaning, starts at $155 per month.

Your exact price is based on your pool size, whether you have a spa, and how many leaves your yard drops, and you get it up front before any work starts. Our pool service price calculator shows your price in about 30 seconds, and our pool service cost guide breaks down both plans in detail.

Filter cleaning at no extra charge

Full service includes cleaning your filter twice a year. Booked as a one-time job, a filter cleaning runs $90 to $145, so that is $180 to $290 a year already built into your full service price.

A clean filter is about more than clear water. When a filter clogs, water has a harder time moving through it, your pump works harder to push it, and your cartridges or filter media wear out sooner. Regular cleanings help your filter and your pump last longer, which is money you don’t have to spend on replacements.

If you have a salt water pool, full service also includes salt cell cleaning, which is $65 a cleaning for one-time and chemical-only clients. See our salt water pool service page for more.

An equipment check every visit, so you can repair instead of replace

Pumps, filters, valves, and salt cells rarely fail all at once. They usually give warning signs first, and someone just has to be looking. George, the owner, is a CPO-certified, licensed pool contractor (CA Lic. #1145343), and he checks your equipment at every visit on both of our monthly plans. If something starts to go, you hear about it right away, while it is usually a smaller, cheaper fix, not after it has broken down.

Here is what we watch for:

  • Drips or leaks at the pump, filter, valves, or fittings
  • A pump that is louder than usual, grinding, or struggling to prime
  • Air bubbles in the pump basket
  • Filter pressure creeping up
  • Rust, cracks, or white crust on equipment and plumbing
  • Scale building up on a salt cell

On a recent job in Folsom, we found a rusted valve slowly leaking under the landscaping next to the equipment. We replaced it with a new check valve and fresh plumbing before it turned into a bigger repair. You can read the full story in our post on fixing a leaking pool valve in Folsom.

And when a piece of equipment really is at the end of its life, you get a straight answer and an up-front price, plus time to plan. That can mean shopping rebates on a new variable-speed pump instead of paying for an emergency replacement. Our guide to pool pump rebates and California pump rules explains how that works. Because George handles pool equipment repair and pump repair and replacement himself, there is no hand-off to another company and no second service call fee from someone new.

Steady care costs less than fixing a green pool

A one-time green-to-clean runs $350 to $715. A single cleanup can cost more than two months of full service. Sacramento-area summers burn through chlorine fast, and consistent weekly testing and balancing is what keeps algae from getting a foothold in the first place. If your pool has already turned, our guide on how to fix a green pool walks you through it.

More ways to save with The Goods

  • The same person every week. George does the work himself, so the person who spots a problem is the same person who can fix it.
  • A report after every visit. See what was tested, what was added, and anything that needs attention. Here is a sample visit report.
  • Same-week start. Service usually starts the same week you approve your quote.

Is it cheaper to take care of your pool yourself?

Doing it yourself saves on labor, but you still buy and store the chemicals, test the water every week, and carry the risk of a mistake turning into a green pool or an equipment repair. If you like doing the cleaning, our chemical-only plan is a good middle ground: you skim and brush, and we handle the chemistry and check your equipment every visit, starting at $120 a month. If you are thinking about changing companies, here is how switching pool companies works.
